Refresh your classroom displays

Refresh your classroom displays with new bulletin boards and wall decorations as a great way to welcome students back to school in the new year and reinforce the lessons your school plans to teach.

Whether your staff are working on the alphabet or numbers with young learners in early years, or teaching students in key stage 2, there’s always a creative and engaging way to transform your classrooms into a learning environment that offers curriculum support and promotes student learning.

Before we share our top ideas for your school and classrooms, here are a few tips for you and your staff to think about when decorating their classroom:

Less is more

When it comes to classroom displays, less is more. The last thing you want for your school is for students to be distracted by wall displays so, just stick to a few relevant content-based items.

Reinforce your curriculum

Choose decorations that only reinforce the current curriculum or lessons that teachers are about to lead into. Replace wall displays and bulletin boards that cover areas your teachers have already taught.

Designate a space for student work

By displaying your students’ creative ideas and work and giving them a say in how their classroom is decorated, they will feel a sense of ownership and responsibility when it comes to their learning environment. To showcase students' work, our poster rolls are ideal for displays.

Choose the right location

The location of the display is an important factor to consider, walls are not the only place for displays. There are additional options including doors, windows, storage cupboards and many more. A factor to consider is visibility, the display needs to be seen in order to reach its full potential. Have teachers set up a plan for each display before they start so they can have the displays in the right location.

Mix up the layout

The layout of the display is arguably just as important as the information displayed. Many students are visual learners so, they respond better to images and colour rather than reels of text. A display full of text can be difficult to read, whereas keywords and images can be used to highlight important information. Having things in different layouts means your class won’t get bored and will be interested in reading what is on the display. Mixing up the colours of the displays will also help children focus and take interest in the boards. Our wall display pack contains everything you need to create a fantastic wall display.

As an SBM, you need to know what supplies and decorations your teachers need, and this can be difficult. Before that happens, you need to know what kind of displays your staff wants to make. So, what should your school include in their classroom wall displays?

Birthday displays

There's no denying that teachers love celebrating their children's birthdays, and one of the best ways of ensuring that nobody's birthday is forgotten is by having a lovely birthday feature prominently displayed in their classroom. This is also a great way for your school to get to know the students at the start of the new school year. You can also do this by creating an ‘All about me’ wall. A new school year brings a new classroom full of students! Why not get to know each other better?

Reading corners

Reading corners are the perfect place for your children's imaginations to run wild. Setting up an area where they can sit, relax and read their favourite stories, sets them up for a lifelong love of reading. Challenge pupils to discuss which books they’re reading or have them read books during the summer holidays to create an interesting display to inspire their classmates into choosing their next book. Reading corners are also a perfect opportunity to set up a colourful and inspiring display in your classroom.

Focus wall

Focus walls keep classrooms up to date on the topics being taught in your school. They’re beneficial as a reminder for both your teachers and your pupils; if they have a question, they can check the focus board first. These are great for developing student independence. They are also handy for parent or inspector visits so they can see exactly what your school and class  is learning.

Art & craft

Be sure to have a display of your pupils’ best artwork. To make their colourful masterpieces really stand out on display, have a neutral background. With our display paper range, you'll have lots to choose from. Displaying students' work provides them with a sense of pride and accomplishment. We must remember it is their classroom as much as the teachers. Most importantly students learn from each other, this provides a learning opportunity.
